Remote-Controlled and Autonomous Mowers: Understanding the Difference

Clarify who controls the machine

A remote-controlled mower is operated by a person using a transmitter. An autonomous mower uses a navigation and control system to carry out mowing tasks with a different level of human involvement. Neither label alone explains every capability of a particular machine.

Some equipment combines manual control with assistance features. For this reason, buyers should request a written description of each operating mode instead of treating the words robotic, smart and remote-controlled as interchangeable.

Write down the workflow you need

Consider who will operate the mower and how the work will be organised. Do you want an operator to guide the machine during each session, or are you investigating scheduled mowing within a defined area? How frequently does the site change, and who will inspect it?

Prepare a list of obstacles, access restrictions and supervision requirements. Ask how the proposed system handles stopping, interrupted communication and restarting. Request a demonstration of the actual controls supplied with the machine.

Check what is included

If a quotation mentions navigation, automatic steering or connected services, ask whether the necessary hardware, setup and service charges are included. Confirm which features operate without an internet connection and which require additional infrastructure.

AC Machinery’s product enquiry should identify the required control method explicitly. Remote-control capability should not be interpreted as a promise of autonomous navigation. Confirm the functions of the exact model before purchase, and use its operator documentation when preparing training.
