Orchard Mowing: Build a Better Equipment Brief

Measure the route, not just the rows

An orchard may have generous spacing between trees and still contain a narrow access gate. Map the full route from the unloading point to the working rows. Include changes in ground level and places where the machine would need to turn or reverse.

Record the lowest clearances beneath branches and support structures. Measurements should describe the space available during actual use, not only the distance between trunks. Include seasonal changes that could reduce access.

Document obstacles and vegetation

Mark irrigation pipes, emitters, stakes and other equipment on a simple site sketch. Photographs of these details help explain where precision matters. Identify areas that require a different method of vegetation management rather than assuming a single mower can reach every location.

Describe the cutting frequency and expected finish. An orchard maintained regularly presents a different purchasing brief from one that is cleared after a long period of growth. Ask the supplier to explain the suitability of the proposed cutting system for your conditions.

Compare the whole working day

Consider transport between blocks, preparation time and access for servicing. Request a demonstration that includes manoeuvring and entry into a representative row, rather than watching only a straight pass in an open field.

Prepare a short checklist covering dimensions, controls, maintenance access and replacement parts. AC Machinery can use your row measurements and photographs to discuss available equipment. Avoid choosing by appearance alone: the machine must fit the practical layout of the orchard and its documented operating limits.
